Bayou St. John: A Beautiful Waterway for Outdoor Fun and Steps to Jazz Fest

by Clint LaCour

A desirable, tree-lined neighborhood within the larger Mid-City area, Bayou St. John is celebrated for its proximity to the bayou and all the outdoor activities that it encourages – from picnicking and volleyball along the banks of the waterway to kayaking and paddle boarding up and down the bayou. But just as noteworthy is its walkable distance to the Fair Grounds, where the New Orleans Jazz Fest is held annually, and the music, casual get-togethers, and crawfish boils spill out into neighbors’ backyards and front porches.

The neighborhood is roughly bounded by the Fair Grounds to the north, the Lafitte Greenway to the south, the bayou to the west, and North Broad Street to the east. The main thoroughfares include Esplanade Avenue, featuring stately homes, sidewalk cafes, corner stores, and coffee shops, North Broad St, a commercial stretch lined with small businesses, and the Lafitte Greenway, a 2.6-mile long linear park with great biking and walking trails and open green space. Moss Street is notable because it winds its way along the bayou, offering water views for all the lucky residents who live alongside it.

City Park is also a short walk from Bayou St. John and boasts the largest green space in New Orleans, offering amenities such as the Museum of Art, the new Children’s Museum, the Sculpture Garden, Café du Monde, boating, sports fields, a dog park, tennis center and more.

In the Bayou St. John neighborhood, you’ll find brightly painted shotguns, grand two-story homes with gingerbread Victorian styling, Craftsman bungalows and much more. Check out some of our favorite spots to hang out, get a bite to eat, and watch the world go by.
