Where to Take a Stroll in New Orleans

If you like to get out and walk, there are plenty of great places for a stroll throughout New Orleans. It’s an absolutely beautify city with incredible architecture, plenty of history, great natural areas and vibrant colors.

Whether you want to enjoy some of the finest historic buildings or you prefer to be surrounded by nature, there’s a place for you to walk in New Orleans. Here are some of the top choices.

Magazine Street

Maybe the best place in New Orleans to walk, if you haven’t been here already, is Magazine Street. This spot offers plenty to see, places to shop, incredible options for dining and so much more. You’ll discover art markets, clothing shops, pawn shops and other boutiques throughout. The best area is between Felicity Street and Jefferson Avenue, which covers about 44 total blocks.

Lafitte Greenway

The Lafitte Greenway covers about 2.5 miles and offers a path for biking and walking that connects to the Iberville, Treme and Mid-City neighborhoods. It’s an area with plenty of new developments and the greenway also features the Sojourner Truth Community Center.

Freret Street

If you head to the area between Napoleon Avenue and Jefferson Avenue, you’ll discover what’s known as the Ferret Arts and Entertainment District. This area is also full of great shops and dining options. Head to Freret Street on the first Saturday of the month, except June, July and August, and you can enjoy the flea market at Ferret Street and Napoleon Avenue. It runs from 12pm to 4pm with live music, plenty of food and plenty of fun.

There are several other great things to discover on Freret Street and it’s one of the top spots for a stroll in New Orleans.

The Fly at Avenger Park

Found in the Audubon Zoo, The Fly is one of the top walking paths in New Orleans. It offers beautiful trees, views of the Mississippi River and plenty of open green space to enjoy.

Louis Armstrong Park

Found close to the Lafitte Greenway, Louis Armstrong Park is a great place for a walk. Enjoy the beautiful lagoon, historical tribute statues and the water fountains. The park is connected to Congo Square and offers plenty of open space to enjoy.

Royal Street

From 11am to 4pm during the week, you can enjoy strolling on Royal Street without worry of any vehicles. It’s closed to traffic other than walkers and becomes a great place to enjoy walking. The art gallery found between Canal Street and Esplanade Avenue makes it great, as well. This section covers 13 blocks and provides all kinds of antique stores, jewelry shops, live music and local food vendors.

Of course, Royal Street also offers a number of great historic buildings with beautiful architecture. Some date all the way back to the 17th century making this a very popular area for walking.

Oak Street

There’s a seven block area starting at South Carrolton Avenue and Oak Street known as the place to shop on Oak Street. It’s a historic area and provides a number of locally owned shops, hobby shops and restaurants throughout. There are plenty of unique signs for some of the businesses and so much more to enjoy as you stroll on Oak Street.

Moon Walk

An 11-block area of the French Quarter, the Moon Walk Path is located near the Mississippi River. It’s near Woldenberg Park, Steamboat Natchez port and Washington Artillery Park. It offers plenty to enjoy along the walk including the RiverWalk Outlet Collection and the Jax Brewery.

French Market

A great portion of French Quarter, the French Market offers an excellent place for a stroll in New Orleans. It’s home to many art vendors and local food vendors, along with plenty more. The market is two blocks in length and found between North Peters Street and French Market Place.

Esplanade Ridge

Found between Bayou St. John and Mid-City, Esplanade Ridge is a great place to walk if you love history. It’s a historical district with plenty to offer. Many pocket parks, restaurants, shops and more are found throughout. You can walk throughout the area and find some incredible architecture and some of New Orleans most beautiful homes.

Coliseum Square

Found in the Lower Garden District, Coliseum Square is one of the best places for a stroll. It’s known for the history and the walking paths found throughout. Of course, many come here for the fountains, too.
