What Type of Construction Projects are Currently Found in New Orleans?

Plenty of new construction is underway in New Orleans. There are several projects you will see going on all throughout the city and many more on the way. Here’s a look at some of the construction projects currently going on in New Orleans.

The Odeon

A new 29-story apartment building will be opening once completed in the South Market District area. It will provide 271 new apartments with a surface parking lot. The tower will cover a total of 414K square feet and it’s located at 701 South Rampart Street.

Hard Rock Hotel New Orleans and Residences

Another building standing 18 stories tall will be erected at 1031 Canal Street. This building will include 62 residential units and 350 hotel rooms. The residential units will range from one to three bedrooms and will offer something unique for those choosing to call the Hard Rock home. There will also be a 12,000 square foot events pace, a rooftop bar and multiple lounges for residents and guests to use.

Magnolia Bridge

The bridge renovation was announced in January and the city plans to spend $1.3 million to make the Magnolia Bridge better. It will be cleaned, painted, have cracks sealed and have any worn structural parts replaced.

The Higgins Hotel and Conference

Another hotel project will become a part of New Orleans at 480 Andrew Higgins Boulevard. This project is coming from the National WWII Museum and broke ground this year. It’s a $66 million project expected to be opened in 2019. The project will bring another 234 hotel rooms to the area and a 22,000 square foot conference center.

New Orleans Hostel

Taking over the old Pickwick Social Club building, the 1028 Canal Street location will become a 122-bed hostel. It’s expected to open in the fall of 2018 as an inviting space with reading lights, charging stations, luggage lockers and plenty more for travelers to enjoy.

Drive Shack New Orleans

The former Times-Picayune facility will be taken over by Drive Shack. It’s located at 3800 Howard Avenue and will become a three-story indoor golf complex covering 60,000 square feet. It’s expected to cost $29 million and construction will begin later this year.

The Garage

A large renovation of an old parking garage at 848 Carondelet Street will turn it into an apartment and condo building. This $49 million project will add 51 new market-rate apartments and 11 condos to the area. It will also provide about 21,000 square feet of commercial space and a parking garage with two car elevators for residents to use.

Parkway Apartments

Located at 4650 Washington Avenue, these apartments are near Xavier University of Louisiana. It’s one of the largest developments in this area of New Orleans with 207 residential units, more than 13,000 square feet of retail space and over 300 parking spots.

Low-Barrier Shelter

The City of New Orleans and Downtown Development District started construction on the first low-barrier shelter in New Orleans. Once completed, it will be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and won’t require any sobriety testing before entry is granted. It will be found in the section floor of the old VA Hospital building at 1530 Gravier Street.

The shelter will include 100 beds, several showers, restrooms, an office space and a kitchen. The shelter just opened earlier this year.

Sidney and Walda Bestoff Sculpture Garden Expansion

The Museum of Art has been working on expanding the Sydney and Walda Bestoff Sculpture Garden along the lagoon in City Park. This expansion will provide a new gallery, stage, and amphitheater, along with pedestrian bridges, outdoor classrooms, and walkways. It’s expected to open later this year.

Canal Street Ferry Terminal

Funding has been secured and a pedestrian bridge will be added to the new Canal Street Ferry Terminal. This will give pedestrians easier access to the ferry. The new terminal is expected to cost $27 million with the bridge costing $7.4 million. Both projects will be completed by 2019.

Eleven Hundred Annunciation

A mixed-use condo project with 86 total units and 16 stories is underway. The condos will range from 740 to 3,000 square feet with private balconies and many other luxury features.

Several other New Orleans construction projects are underway or in the works. The city is growing and plenty of buildings are being constructed to allow those relocating to New Orleans a place to live and more entertainment options. Expect more projects to be added to the list by the end of the year, as plenty more are in the works waiting for approval and funding.
