Top New Orleans Developments from 2017

by Clint LaCour

After a year of growth, it’s important to look back and realize all that was accomplished in New Orleans. Several great developments were completed to improve this great city. Here’s a look at just a few of the many developments from 2017 in New Orleans.

Bourbon Street Development

Some of the construction projects were delayed on Bourbon Street, but it did get freshly paved. The construction from blocks 100 to 800 was completed, which included movable bollards for traffic control during events and new pavement.

Oretha Castle Haley Corridor Streetscape Project

A huge streetscape project in the historic corridor of Central City was just completed in 2017. This project included adding a new bike lane, replacing sidewalks and replacing worn out asphalt.

Music Playground

A very unique and very cool project call The Hangout, this development is an interactive art and sound installation known as a music playground. It was developed by Urban Conga and it’s found behind the Lower 9th Ward Market.

Schoolyard Designed by Students

Students don’t usually get the chance to design their own playground or even play much of a role in the process. However, the Paul Habans Charter School’s play area was redesigned by students after it was flooded due to heavy rain. It’s a $350K project including a club house, hammocks, a lion statue, slide, monkey bars and more. It’s also designed to capture the first 1.25 inches of rainfall and was developed by The Trust for Public Land.

Blue Bikes

A huge win for the City of New Orleans, Blue Bikes is the new bike share program found throughout the city. It will be completely rolled out by the end of 2018 with 70 stations and more than 700 bicycles throughout the city.

The Green Project

Preservation Resource Center’s Salvage Store has partnered with the Green Project to expand the store space. The expansion added about 10,000 new square feet to the facility.

Other developments from 2017 include:

  •          Dave & Buster’s – New location in the Central Business District
  •          Streetwise – New app to warn residents of flooded streets during bad weather
  •          Alder Hotel – New hotel in the Freret neighborhood
  •          FitLot – 1,000 square foot outdoor fitness center on the Lafitte Greenway

Along with these great developments, many more are expected throughout 2018.
