Top New Orleans Breweries to Check Out

Breweries seem to be popping up on every corner throughout New Orleans. More than a half dozen have popped up over the past few years with more on the way. It’s becoming a bit more of the European style with a brewery or brew pub in every neighborhood.

Each of the breweries, brewpubs and tap rooms has something unique to offer to the local beer scene. There are several to check out and if you love beer, you’ll want to check them all out.

Gordon Biersch – 200 Poydras Street

While it’s a national chain, Gordon Biersch still produces beer on site in New Orleans. It’s as fresh as it gets and it’s found next to Harrah’s Casino. This German-style brewery uses hop-forward brewing for IPAs and produces many other choices, such as coffee lagers and witbiers.

Courtyard Brewery – 1020 Erato Street

Opened in 2014, Courtyard Brewery is a newer choice in New Orleans. It’s a very small option with guest taps for other breweries in the taproom. The brewery does produce different styles including IPAs, stouts, fruit beers, lagers and sours. There are always plenty of options in the tap room and often food trucks are found here.

40 Arpent Brewing – 6809 North Peters Street, Arabi

Opened in 2014, 40 Arpent Brewing has a taproom, which provides hours from Thursday through Sunday. The facility offers great views of the Mississippi River with plenty of TVs for sports and all kinds of games. They provide all kinds of unique beers and food trucks are often set up on the weekends.

Urban South Brewery – 1645 Tchoupitoulas Street

Opened in 2016, Urban South Brewery has doubled the size of the facility since opening. They offer specialty beers with all kinds of unique options. They also have a Holy Roller IPA and plenty of flagship beers to choose from.

Parleaux Beer Lab – 634 Lesseps Street

Just as the name says, Parleaux Beer Lab loves to experiment. They have only been open for a few months, but already have a following. The beer garden is very popular and so is the taproom. Many unique beers are found here and many food trucks come out at night, as well.

Royal Brewery – 7366 Townsend Place

Found on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Royal Brewery offers great beer with plenty of food trucks coming out often. They have a game room and the beer offers unique choices with names coming from indigenous insects in Louisiana, such as the Culicidae Ale or the Termite Lager.

Port Orleans Brewing Company – 4124 Tchoupitoulas Street

Another newer brewery, Port Orleans Brewing Company offers full-flavored beers with a low-alcohol content. They prefer to produce under-appreciated beer with plenty to offer. An onsite kitchen provides unique dishes to go with the beer, as well.

Brieux Carre – 2115 Decatur Street

A small brewery with a taproom, Brieux Carre just opened this year. They will be expanding their space with a new second story deck and a beer garden very soon. The beer here has already started to catch on with many crazy options and a few mainstream styles.

Wayward Owl Brewing – 3940 Thalia Street

Taking over the old GEM theater, Wayward Owl Brewing opened in 2016. This brewery offers a unique spot with old movie theater seat, sofas, shuffleboard and more. They serve beer on cask on Wednesdays and even host regular scavenger hunts. Live music is also found here often.

Second Line Brewing – 433 North Bernadotte Street

A Mid-City brewery with plenty to offer, Second Line opened in 2015. The brewery offers a family friendly beer garden with all kinds of options. They like to experiment with new beers and food trucks are often out by the beer garden, as well.

Broad Street Cider & Ale – 2723 Broad Street

The newest of the breweries, Broad Street Cider & Ale just opened. It’s a great choice if you want to try craft cider, but they also carry craft beer.

NOLA Brewing – 3001 Tchoupitoulas Street

As the first production brewery in New Orleans since Dixie moved in 2005, NOLA Brewery opened in 2008. They have a tap room open every day from 11am to 11pm and provide a wide variety of options from the Irish Channel Stout to the NOLA Blond. Many sour beers are on tap here, as well.

Crescent City Brewhouse – 527 Decatur Street

A brewpub with a German focus, Crescent City Brewhouse goes back to 1991. They started four years after Abita did and the classic style from German brewmaster Wolfram Koehler has been very popular over the years. The brewpub offers a full restaurant menu and always has four or five German beers on tap.

Along with these New Orleans breweries, many others will be opening soon including both Miel Brewery (late 2017 or early 2018) and Cajun Fire Brewing (late 2017 or early 2018).
