Top Five Neighborhoods Found in New Orleans

by Clint LaCour

Known as the “Big Easy” New Orleans is full of great neighborhoods. It’s a very historic city with southern charm and some incredible neighborhoods. Listing the top five isn’t easy as there are so many to choose from. However, here’s a quick look at five of the absolute best neighborhoods to call home if you’re moving to New Orleans.

Uptown

Also known as the Uptown/Carrollton area, this neighborhood is found to the west of the very popular French Quarter. It’s a very walkable area with plenty to offer. Grocery stores, schools, restaurants and local shops are found throughout. The schools are above average and the neighborhood has become a popular spot for families and other home buyers moving to New Orleans.

Central Business District

The Central Business District or CBD or Warehouse District is also found close to French Quarter. It’s a very walkable area with plenty of stores, shops, dining options, entertainment venues and schools nearby. You will also find the Superdome here, along with The Smoothie King Center. There’s no shortage of things to do within the Central Business District.

Lakeview

A very popular neighborhood found near Lake Ponchartrain, Lakeview offers plenty of remodeled homes and plenty of new construction options. It’s filled with ranch-style options, some multi-family choices, Craftsman homes and even cottages from the 1950s. The neighborhood also offers easy access to shopping, dining and, of course, the lake. Lakeview features City Park and plenty of other great attractions, along with many annual events.

The French Quarter

Probably the most known, most popular and the absolute best neighborhood to call home in New Orleans, The French Quarter is a favorite of just about everybody. It’s known for Mardi Gras and the nightlife, but it’s also incredibly walkable. In fact, it’s the most walkable neighborhood in all of New Orleans.

The French Quarter, however, isn’t cheap. Housing here is so popular it runs about 142% higher than the city’s average. Residents do get a ton of perks for the higher housing cost, however. The French Quarter is steeped in history, offers some of the city’s best restaurants, provides plenty of nightlife and it’s very close to the Central Business District.

Enjoy landmarks, such as the Mississippi River, Bourbon Street and Jackson Square right in your neighborhood. In addition, some of the most popular events held in New Orleans happen in The French Quarter.

Marigny

The neighborhood found to the north east of the French Quarter is known as Marigny. It’s along the Mississippi River and officially called Faubourg Marigny. It’s home to Washington square and offers a number of good places to eat and drink. Grocery stores are found throughout and it’s a rather walkable neighborhood. Marigny attracts many residents because it’s more affordable than CBD or the French Quarter.

These are the top five neighborhoods found in New Orleans, at least if you’re looking to live in the heart of the city. Once you leave the major downtown area, the list of top New Orleans neighborhoods could get very long.
