Tips for a Safe & Happy Family Mardi Gras

If you have plans to attend Mardi Gras as a family, it’s important to know what you’re getting into. There are several parades and events scheduled throughout the season of Mardi Gras. You want to make sure you check the parade schedule and the event details to ensure it’s a good family-friendly option. Not all parades and events cater to families or are safe for children. Here are a few tips to ensure a great family Mardi Gras trip.
Safety Comes First
Your safety and the safety of your family come first. Make sure you arrive early to allow children to get used to the crowds. In addition, make sure your children have your last name and phone number written on their arm, clothing or other items in case they get lost.
Choose a meeting place for the family if you do get separated and teach your children to seek out police if they are lost. It’s also important to keep children away from the marching bands and the floats as they travel the parade route.
Dress Correctly and Bring Supplies
You don’t have to feel like you’re in a fashion show at Mardi Gras. Yes, you can wear costumes, but make sure you have good walking shoes on, preferably water-proof. Check the weather ahead of time and prepare by layering clothing for warmer temperatures during the day and cooler temperatures at night.
Make sure you bring supplies, as well. You want to bring snacks, toiletries and a cell phone to ensure you have everything you need. An umbrella is a good idea and you can even pack a picnic basket.

Take in the Traditions
When it comes to catching beads and doubloons, it can be a great family experience. In addition, make sure to enjoy king cake and even take the time to visit attractions, such as the Audubon Zoo, Storyland and the Louisiana Children’s Museum during this time of year.
Teach Your Children About Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras has a deep history and offers plenty more than just parades. It’s a great time to teach your children about the event, the history of the event and everything surrounding it.
Mardi Gras can be a very family-friendly event, if you take the time to plan properly and prepare your children. Make sure you have supplies and take safety seriously. In addition, have plenty of fun with your family this Mardi Gras season!
