The Lower Garden District: Wonderfully Walkable and Home to Coliseum Square

by Clint LaCour

The Lower Garden District is a charming, historically significant neighborhood roughly bounded by Jackson Avenue, Prytania Street, Erato Street and Chippewa Street. Known for 19th century Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne architectural styles, including sing and double Shotguns, the neighborhood is situated between the Garden District and the Warehouse District. As expansion from the French Quarter took place during the early 1800s, city planner Barthélemy Lafon, a lover of the classics, named the neighborhood’s streets after the nine muses of Greek mythology — Calliope, Clio, Erato, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Euterpe, Polymnia and Urania.

Known for a walkable stretch of Magazine Street with lovely cafés, bars, art galleries, boutiques and venues, the Lower Garden District is also home to oak-lined streets and beautiful Coliseum Square. A leafy, wedge-shaped, pet-friendly park, it’s surrounded by double galleried homes with gracious porches and balconies. Just a few blocks away, Annunciation Square offers green spaces for recreation, including basketball courts and soccer fields. The neighborhood’s close-knit residents – a mix of young and old, homeowners and renters — are passionate about its rich heritage and eclectic vibe and are active in the Lower Garden District Association.
