The Freret Neighborhood: Lively, Walkable and Lots to Eat

The Rebirth of Freret
The Freret area is a lively neighborhood in Uptown New Orleans that has seen a tremendous rebirth in the last 10-15 years. Centrally located, walkable to Tulane and Loyola Universities, and close to great public and private schools, Freret is bounded by South Claiborne Avenue to the north, Napoleon Avenue to the east, LaSalle Street to the south and Jefferson Avenue to the west.
The Thriving Freret Corridor
The neighborhood’s main commercial thoroughfare is referred to as the Freret Corridor – which consists of the Freret Street city blocks that run between Napoleon Avenue and Jefferson Avenue. It boasts an eclectic variety of restaurants, cocktail bars, coffee shops, galleries, corner groceries and more. Frequented by those who live in the community, it’s also popular among students who walk the few blocks from their campuses to enjoy all that it has to offer.
Landmarks and Events
Freret is home to Ochsner Baptist Hospital, Evans Playground, the Freret Street Market — a monthly food, art, and flea market that draws family-friendly crowds – as well as the annual Freret Street Festival which features over 200 local artists, 20 bands and three stages. While the monthly markets and festival couldn’t take place in 2020, organizers are looking forward to their return in the Fall of 2021. There’s even the Krewe of Freret with its own Mardi Gras parade, busily planning for the revelry of 2022.
