The Best Things to Do in Louisiana This July: New Orleans, Baton Rouge & Northshore Events
If there's one thing July proves, it's that Louisiana doesn't slow down for summer.
The heat may be part of the experience, but so are the festivals, concerts, fireworks, and neighborhood traditions that fill the month. Across New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and the Northshore, July offers plenty of reasons to get out, stay a little later, and enjoy where you live.
Whether you're planning a weekend around a major festival or simply looking for a reason to get out and explore, here’s what’s happening across Southeast Louisiana this month.
Summer, the New Orleans Way
July brings some of the city's most anticipated events, blending music, culture, and traditions that could only happen here.
ESSENCE Festival of Culture® (July 3–5)
One of the biggest weekends of the year returns as the ESSENCE Festival takes over the city. The Caesars Superdome hosts a star-studded lineup featuring artists like Cardi B and Kehlani, alongside performances spanning R&B, hip-hop, gospel, soul, and funk.
Beyond the concerts, attendees can explore panel discussions, workshops, speakers, and the popular ESSENCE Expo Experience, creating a celebration of culture, creativity, and community.
Bastille Day Fête (July 10)
New Orleans' French heritage takes center stage during this annual celebration. Expect live music, French-inspired food, and a festive atmosphere that brings a touch of France to the heart of the city.
Running of the Bulls (July 10–12)
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this uniquely New Orleans tradition returns for a full weekend of festivities. From the official opening ceremony to the famous run through downtown, it remains one of the city's most entertaining summer events.
X Games Championship (July 24–26)
For the first time ever, the X Games Championship arrives in New Orleans. Elite skateboarding, BMX, and Moto X athletes will compete across three action-packed days, joined by a live music lineup that includes Metro Boomin.
Baton Rouge: Community, Culture, and Summer Energy
Summer in Baton Rouge is all about gathering together.
From Independence Day celebrations to local festivals and culinary experiences, July offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the city and its strong sense of community.
Fourth of July in Baton Rouge
Downtown Baton Rouge becomes the center of Independence Day festivities with America 250 on the River, featuring live entertainment, family-friendly activities, and community celebrations along the Mississippi River.
The evening concludes with the Baton Rouge Concert at the Plaza and WBRZ's Fireworks on the Mississippi, a tradition many locals look forward to each year.
3rd Annual (Neighbor) Hood Festival (July 18)
This community-focused event celebrates Louisiana's rich history and cultural diversity through live music, film screenings, local vendors, food courts, and educational exhibits.
And yes—the fan-favorite Hot Dog Eating Contest returns.
Baton Rouge Summer Restaurant Week (July 20–25)
More than 25 local restaurants will participate in this year's Restaurant Week, offering curated menus and special dining experiences that showcase Baton Rouge's growing culinary scene.
It's the perfect excuse to discover a new favorite restaurant—or revisit a longtime classic.
Northshore: Community Traditions and Summer Gatherings
July on the Northshore moves at its own pace.
The celebrations are spread across communities, the events feel a little more personal, and summer traditions continue to bring neighbors together throughout St. Tammany Parish.
Fourth of July Celebrations Across the Northshore
The holiday weekend offers no shortage of ways to celebrate. Pearl River's 8th Annual Independence Day Celebration invites families to gather with lawn chairs and blankets, while Covington hosts the America 250 Concert at the Trailhead.
Additional celebrations include the Abita Springs Fourth of July Celebration, Light Up the Lake, and Sparks in the Park.
Northshore Summer Favorites
Two events continue to define summer on the Northshore. The Northshore Cajun Dance at Abita Town Hall welcomes both seasoned dancers and first-timers with free lessons and live music.
Meanwhile, Sunset at the Landing continues its popular riverfront concert series featuring jazz, blues, bluegrass, and folk music in one of Covington's most scenic settings.
Cruisin' for Kicks (July 18)
Hosted by Abita Brewing Company, this community fundraiser combines a classic car show, live music, food trucks, and family-friendly activities while supporting the Bayou Lacombe Cardinals' Back-to-School program.
Running of the Fools (July 18)
Part race, part celebration, Running of the Fools encourages participants to show up in colorful costumes and embrace the festive spirit. The event includes pre- and post-race festivities, making it one of the area's most entertaining summer traditions.
Why July Feels Different
July has a way of bringing Louisiana communities together. Whether it's fireworks over the Mississippi River, live music along the Bogue Falaya, or thousands of people gathering in New Orleans for one of the country's most influential cultural festivals, this month reminds us that summer here is less about slowing down and more about finding new reasons to connect.
And that's what makes life in Southeast Louisiana special.
