How to Prepare Your New Orleans Home for the Winter

by Clint LaCour

While the New Orleans area may not experience a winter full of snow and cold, it’s still necessary to prepare your home for the winter. The last snowfall was back in 2008 and while it may not snow in New Orleans often, the winter still requires some home preparation. Here are a few of the things you should do before it starts to get a bit colder.

Clean out the Gutters

Clogged gutters can cause issues that can lead to major home repairs. Cleaning out the gutters will ensure any water coming through the area this winter will be filtered way from your home without causing any damage. The last thing you need is clogged gutters causing issues with your roof, foundation or water damage throughout your home.

Get your HVAC System Serviced

It’s best to have your HVAC system serviced at least once per year. In fact, you may not use the heat much, which means having it serviced before it gets too cold to handle is even more important. The last thing you want to do it crank on the heat only to smell something foul or burning.

It’s dangerous to turn on the heating unit if you have a cracked chamber. In addition, you don’t want to wait until the day the weather service issues a freeze warning to discover something like this. Have your HVAC system serviced as soon as possible.

Wrap any Exposed Pipes

While it won’t dip below freezing much in New Orleans, when it happens, pipes can burst. Insulating your exposed pipes will help to ensure you don’t have to worry about this. Most local hardware stores will carry everything you need and it won’t cost much to keep those pipes from bursting.

Seed Your Lawn with Winter Rye

If you want to enjoy green grass all the way through the year, seed it with winter rye. You’ll have to cut the grass in the winter, but you’ll also have green grass year-round, which can be very nice.

While New Orleans winters are certainly not harsh, you still want to make sure your property is prepared before it gets too cold.
