Centerhall Homes: A Historic Architectural Style in New Orleans

Are you familiar with the Centerhall homes found throughout New Orleans? This is one of the most unique styles found throughout the area and can be spotted by finding the five openings across the front. These homes often have pillars separating the openings with a door in the center, which leads to a hallway with windows on either side.

The type of architecture is commonly found in the Carrollton, Garden District, Esplanade Ridge and Uptown neighborhoods of New Orleans. These homes are nearly always set back from the sidewalk providing a large front yard, which is usually gated. The front porch is full width, as well.

Some of these Centerhall homes in New Orleans are found in the French Quarter, Tremé and Faubourg Marigny neighborhoods. These neighborhoods feature more of the masonry Centerhall style, however. The homes are not setback from the sidewalk and they don’t include the front porch.

This specific architectural style was most commonly used from 1803 to 1870. The homes are usually one-and-a-half stories tall and some will be raised between two and eight feet above the ground on brick piers. Other features found in these homes include the side-gabled roof, central dormer and the wood exterior.
