Carrollton: Close to Universities + A Lush Canopy of Live Oaks

by Julie Koppman

The historic Carrollton neighborhood, which is part of Uptown New Orleans, is an oak tree-lined residential area home to a diverse community of young and old, renters, homeowners, families, university students, and faculty. It’s the farthest upriver section of Uptown, was annexed by New Orleans in 1874, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Today, it’s roughly bounded by Carrollton Avenue to the west, St. Charles Avenue to the south, Lowerline Street to the east and Claiborne Avenue to the north.

With streetcars that run along the neutral grounds of St. Charles Avenue and Carrollton Avenue, the neighborhood is easy to get around and walkable, as well. The heart of its commercial district is Oak Street, with wonderful bookstores, restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and yoga studios, while Maple Street offers great spots as well — from cafés and bakeries to salons and other small businesses that cater to Tulane and Loyola University students.

Home to neighborhood landmarks like Camellia Grill and Palmer Park and schools such as St. Andrews Episcopal, Lusher Charter, and Stuart Hall, Carrollton has so much to offer. And you’ll find a variety of beautiful, historic architecture, as well — from colorful shotguns to Greek Revival homes and stately center hall cottages.
