June is recognized internationally as LBGTQ+ Pride Month. During June, people all over the world will be celebrating the contributions and achievements of persons within the LBGTQ+ communities. A meaningful way to celebrate Pride Month is by donating to one of the many LGBTQ+ organizations that address issues facing queer and trans communities. Here are four local LBGTQ+ nonprofits you should support this month.
BreakOUT!
BreakOUT seeks to end the criminalization of LBGTQ+ youth who are directly impacted by the juvenile justice system in New Orleans. Through youth organizing, BreakOUT works to create policies to build a safer New Orleans for LBGTQ+ youth. The organization provides housing, leadership programs, and healing resources for youth of the LBGTQ+ community.
Forum For Equality
Forum for Equality is an LGBTQ+ human rights organization dedicated to establishing a society free from discrimination. Since 1989, the organization has actively helped pass civil rights advancements for persons of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities in Louisiana. Forum for Equality works to develop and implement educational programs on LGBTQ+ issues and conducts comprehensive campaigns to generate public support for equal rights. This organization is near and dear to our hearts as Rêve partners Tracey Moore and Joey Walker sit on the board of directors.
Belle Reve
Belle Reve is an affordable housing facility for seniors living with disabilities, specifically HIV and AIDS. Their mission is to “provide affordable housing that is consistent with the principles of diversity, respect, and dignity.” In addition to the live-in facility, the organization has a center that offers various multifunctional indoor and outdoor spaces to ensure the senior community of New Orleans has a place to call their own.
Gulf South LBGTQ+ Chamber of Commerce
Gulf South LBGTQ+ Chamber of Commerce is an organization that works to promote an inclusive business environment by connecting LGBTQ+-owned/operated and allied businesses in the Gulf South. The organization aims to create a progressive society where individuals and businesses have equal rights, representation, and opportunities. Not only is Rêve a sponsor of Gulf South LBGTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, but Rêve partner, Joey Walker, is a board member.
The advocacy work of these four organizations makes a significant difference in the livelihoods of local LBGTQ+ persons by addressing inequality, improving public policy, and building a more accepting world. We truly hope you consider supporting one of these fantastic nonprofits this Pride Month.
Happy Pride, Everyone.
