Tremé Celebrates African-American and Creole Heritage, Music, and Architecture

by Julie Koppman

Tremé is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans and borders the north side of the French Quarter. Early in the city’s history, it was home to many free people of color and today plays an important role as a center for African-American and Creole heritage and culture. Roughly bounded by Esplanade Avenue to the east, North Rampart Street to the south, St. Louis Street to the west and North Broad Street to the north, Tremé is known as the birthplace of many famous jazz musicians. Home to Creole architecture and soul food, it features colorful Creole cottages built in the 1830s, townhouses from the 1840s, and double shotguns that date back to the 1890s.

Landmarks throughout the neighborhood are tributes to its unique history — from the Backstreet Cultural Museum, which celebrates Second Lines, Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, and Mardi Gras Indians – to the 32-acre Louis Armstrong Park dedicated to New Orleans’ famous native son. Other notable sites in Tremé include St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, the oldest African-American Catholic parish in the country, and a large section of the Lafitte Greenway, a 2.6-mile long linear park with biking and walking trails and open green space.

Thoroughfares include Esplanade Avenue, featuring stately homes, mature oak trees, sidewalk cafes, corner stores, and coffee shops, and North Broad St, a commercial stretch lined with small businesses.

Noteworthy restaurants, theaters and coffee shops – including national award-winning spots like Dooky Chase and Willie Mae’s Scotch House — have for years served as gathering places for politicians, civil rights leaders, artists, and musicians.
