Jazz Fest Survival Guide

by Deveney Marshall

If you’re like us, you are excitedly anticipating the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. After a two-year hiatus, our favorite festival is back, and it will be better than ever! For us, The Jazz Fest isn’t only a music festival but a celebration of our city’s vibrant culture.

Since festin’ is a way of life, we know a thing or two about ensuring you have a great festival experience. Read our Jazz Fest Survival Guide below.

#1. Be Prepared For ALL Weather Conditions

Rain or Shine the Jazz Fest still happens. It’s best to prepare for all weather conditions. Bring a rain poncho, umbrella, and other rain gear to guarantee you stay dry and enjoy the fest.

#2. Wear Closed-Toe Shoes

Wearing closed-toed shoes to the fest is a MUST. The Fairgrounds don’t have much grass and can get pretty muddy. It’s best to wear closed-toe shoes to ensure your feet stay protected.

#3. Wear A Fanny Pack or Festival Bag

When you’re at a festival, the last thing you want to lug around is a heavy bag. Wear a fanny pack or lightweight festival bag to carry all of your valuables.

#4. Bring A Portable Chair

Unless you plan on sitting on the ground, which may or may not be muddy, then you want to bring a portable chair to sit in.

#5. Make Sure To Have Cash On Hand

Most food and art vendors at the Jazz Fest only accept cash, and although there are ATMs everywhere, unless you want to rack up ATM fees, it’s best to bring cash.

#6. Don’t Just Stick To The Main Stage

There are thirteen music stages in total at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, to ensure you have the full Jazz Fest experience, walk around and enjoy all the genres of music the festival has to offer.

#7. Stay Hydrated

Depending on what time you get to the festival, you can be there for up to eight hours. Between all the food, dancing, and fun, stay hydrated by drinking an ample amount of water.

#8. Bring A Portable Cell Phone Charger

Portable charges maintain your lifeline at festivals and big events. Make sure you have one handy.

#9. Wear Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is essential when you attend outdoor events. Protect yourself by wearing sunscreen.

#10. Have A Good Time

Our last tip is to make sure you have a grand ole time! The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is one of the best festivals in the world. Make sure you soak up and fully enjoy your experience.

Happy Festin’!
