Rêve Cares: Meet Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana

Each month Rêve | Realtors chooses a Louisiana-based non-profit organization to support, this month, we have chosen Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL). Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) has a mission that is near and dear to our hearts, and that is to protect our Louisiana wetlands.

In the past 50 years, more than 1,500 square miles of coastal Louisiana have vanished, and without immediate action, our state is projected to lose an additional 1,000 square miles of land by the year 2050. As we know, Louisiana's coastal land serves a great purpose. Not only is it an important habitat for fish and wildlife, but it also provides a storm buffer for communities, transportation routes, and energy infrastructure. 

Founded in 1988, Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) represents Louisiana businesses, various communities, and residents who share a common goal and commitment to the sustainability of coastal Louisiana. Through partnership and community, CRCL has been able to successfully advocate for Louisiana wetlands and implement programs to restore our state’s coastal land. 

In 2014, CRCL established the Oyster Shell Recycling Program, which collects oyster shells from New Orleans-area restaurants and uses those shells to restore oyster reefs that help protect Louisiana’s eroding coastline. Since starting the program, CRCL has recycled over 10 million pounds of oyster shells. Over the years, these oyster shell reefs have reduced shoreline erosion by 50%. 

CRCL has proven through scientific innovation and community, we can preserve and restore coastal Louisiana.​​ It is essential we support organizations such as Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana who are committed to the advocacy, education, and awareness of preserving such a crucial aspect of our state.
