Mid-City Neighborhood
New Orleans, Right in
the Middle of It
Mid-City sits midway between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, at the center of New Orleans in every sense.
Once swampland, the area became one of the city’s most livable neighborhoods after engineer A. Baldwin Wood’s drainage pumps went into service in the 1910s. Today the Mid-City Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Colorful shotguns, brightly painted cottages with ironwork, and large live oaks line its streets, and the Krewe of Mid-City parades through every Carnival season.
Mid-City real estate spans a wide range, from shotguns and cottages to single-family homes, condos, and townhomes, many built in the early 1900s with their original architectural character intact. Buyers come for a genuine local experience without French Quarter or Garden District prices. Close to everything, and priced accordingly.
Why People Love
Life in Mid-City
Dining & Local Favorites
Parkway Bakery & Tavern is a New Orleans institution, and its po-boys draw lines from across the city. Katie’s Restaurant, Mid-City Pizza, Twelve Mile Limit, and Pat’s Lounge anchor the dining and nightlife scene, while Bayou Beer Garden and Neyow’s Creole Café round out a neighborhood that keeps its residents very well fed.
City Park & Outdoors
City Park, about 1,300 acres of trails, lagoons, and greenery, is Mid-City’s backyard. It’s home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, the Botanical Garden, and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park. Bayou St. John runs along the neighborhood’s edge for kayaking and picnics year-round.
Music & Events
Rock ’n’ Bowl, where you can bowl and catch live music under the same roof, has been a local institution since 1988, and Chickie Wah Wah is a beloved music venue. Celebration in the Oaks, Jazz Fest at the nearby Fair Grounds, and the Krewe of Mid-City’s parade fill the calendar all year.
Transit & Walkability
The Canal Street streetcar runs through the center of Mid-City, connecting residents to City Park, the CBD, and the French Quarter. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and local shops are within walking distance of most of the neighborhood, making daily errands easy without a car.
