What is considered Mid-City in New Orleans?
Are you looking for homes for sale in Mid-City New Orleans? To make your search easier, it’d be worthwhile to know the areas that constitute the Mid-City neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. As the name suggests, Mid-City is the region in the middle of New Orleans. More specifically, it spans the center of the metropolitan area of New Orleans, located about midway between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. It’s a sub-district of the Mid-City district. As a historic district, it has earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The City Planning Commission has established its boundaries to be: City Park Avenue, Toulouse Street, North Carrollton and Orleans Avenues, Bayou St. John and St. Louis Street to the north, North Broad Street to the east, and the Pontchartrain Expressway to the west. However unofficially, the area spanning Mid-City is broader, also including the regions bordering these areas. The region near the Fairgrounds and the portion of Esplanade Avenue that lies in close proximity is typically called the Bayou St. John neighborhood or Esplanade Ridge. On crossing the bridge over the tail of Esplanade in front of City Park, one can see the old Bayou. It is a calm area that winds through the old urban locality and consists of a long stretch of water surrounded by grassy slopes. Mid-City is not the most popular area for tourists unlike some of the other hotspots, however, it has quite a few attractions and a charm of its own. Younger people looking for historic homes are drawn to this region of the city. So if you’re looking for out-of-the-world residences with lovely original architectural characteristics, then Mid-City New Orleans homes for sale would offer the perfect start to your search.
How Old is Mid-City New Orleans?
Mid-City is situated on what was once a gradually slanting section of the river’s plains or the back slope of the Mississippi river. Since it wasn’t developed then, quite understandably there were no settlements in this part of the city unlike today. So the city limits closed at the swamp and didn’t include the lake then like they do now. The Esplanade Ridge and the adjacent Metairie Ridge formed a natural spur from the river. But now these elevated sections surround the Mid-City area. However, the region remained a backswamp until development transformed it in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. And thus originated what is now known as the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans. Today it’s a bustling residential zone with a ton of homes for sale in Mid-City New Orleans. Residents of this region enjoy the urban suburban mix feel it offers.
