The area of New Orleans known as Central City was originally created in 1809 by Barthelemy Lafon. It was named at a historic district in 1982 and has become one of the most popular places to call home in the city.
Central City was very popular in the 1960s during the Civil Rights movement, but fell into poverty through the 1990s. It wasn't until the late 1990s, when the Ashe Cultural Arts Center and Cafe Reconcile opened in Central City, that this neighborhood started its revival.
Today, the neighborhood has become revitalized and includes many new businesses, new restaurants and plenty of new homes. It's once again a great place to call home and has started to become one of the most popular neighborhoods in New Orleans.

Real Estate in Central City
As the commercial developments started to pour in, so did the real estate developments. Many investors bought up neglected homes and rehabilitated them before selling them. Central City is more affordable than the Lower Garden district, but average home prices are still on the rise, especially those near St. Charles Avenue.
The neighborhood is home to many cottages and homes with traditional Creole elements. It's not uncommon to find cast-iron gates, small porches and plenty of windows in the homes throughout. Along with cottages, Central City is home to a number of shotgun homes, brick multi-level apartment complexes and wooden doubles.
While street parking may be available with some homes, finding a home with a garage in Central City is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. Parking isn't always easy throughout the area, but residents seem to manage. About 50% of the homes have street parking.
Shopping, Dining & Entertainment
Central City is bordered by the Lower Garden District and close to Uptown, Mid-City and the downtown area. While the neighborhood offers plenty of things to do, it's also very close to many of the hottest areas of New Orleans.
Within the borders of Central City, many businesses are available for residents to enjoy. Restaurants, local boutiques and entertainment options are found all throughout. Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard is the historic street with many shopping options and other businesses found in Central City.
Casa Borrega offers a unique Mexican restaurants, while Zeitgeist is an arts center residents seem to enjoy. Central City is also home to the New Orleans Jazz Market, Southern Food and Beverage Museum, Toups South, Cave Reconcile, Dryades Public Market and the Ashe Cultural Arts Center.
In fact, Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard was names as one of the Great American Main Streets in 2017. It was only one of three winters of this award from the National Main Street Center. This main road is also home to an annual festival and the neighborhood offers a number of other great events throughout the year.
Living in Central City
Central City offers an affordable alternative to some of the surrounding neighborhoods. It has been revitalized with plenty of great restaurants, shopping options and entertainment found throughout. Those looking for a home in a very desirable location will enjoy shopping in the neighborhood of Central City.
